Chips JU is organising a strategic workshop on Microelectronics for 6G – Front-End Module (FEM) to collect detailed feedback from key stakeholders on the needs, challenges, and priorities for a potential Focus Topic dedicated to a FEM extension—a crucial area for advancing 6G technologies.
This proposed Focus Topic would foster innovation in the sector and is being considered for inclusion in the Chips JU Work Programme 2026, in synergy and complementarity with the ongoing FEM-related activities under the Smart Networks and Services (SNS) programme.
Context and Objective
The current SNS FEM call does not fully address the diversity of architectural scenarios, technological assessments, or the integration of all relevant modules. Building on SNS FEM design activities for partial FR3 (7–15 GHz) operations, this proposed extension aims to bridge the gaps and strengthen the business impact of a European FEM solution for 6G FR3.
The FEM extension is expected to:
-
Advance hardware development towards mature technologies, leading to IP and PoC outcomes in mobile communications.
-
Achieve a higher level of integration and progress towards TRL 7–8, including system validation and Over-the-Air (OTA) demonstrations.
-
Connect integration efforts with the APECS pilot line and Active Antenna System (AAS) PoC development.
-
Lay the groundwork for future Innovation Actions (IAs) aimed at industrial-scale integration and manufacturing readiness.
Structure and Expected Outcomes
The workshop will be structured around two key sessions:
-
FEM Enabling Technologies – Exploring the semiconductor R&I requirements to build the technological foundation for FEM.
-
Integration and Validation – Focusing on PoC development, system integration, and pre-industrialisation via pilot lines.
Each session will include:
-
A presentation of the FEM extension proposal.
-
Feedback from stakeholders, including industry representatives (telecom and microelectronics), RTOs, and experts.
-
Contributions from Chips JU’s industrial associations (AENEAS, EPoSS, INSIDE) and Participating States.
-
A wrap-up and conclusions session to highlight the key elements needed to draft the potential FEM Focus Topic.
