Over the first year of the European Chips Skills Academy Project (ECSA), DECISION Etudes & Conseil has analysed data on employment, education, and investment to prepare a comprehensive report on talent in the European semiconductor ecosystem. In addition to laying out key metrics on workforce needs, STEM graduates entering the industry, and production capacity, among others, the Skills Strategy also dives into the current and anticipated skills needs of Europe’s semiconductor sector. Annual reports will follow to track changes and shape initiatives for workforce development, upskilling, and reskilling.
Key 2024 findings
Despite rapid automation in back-end activities, strong production gains in the sector could lead to employment growth of 5.0% CAGR by 2030. However, this growth comes with challenges—by 2030, the EU is projected to face a talent shortfall of 75,390 positions, with only 64% of roles potentially filled! High-demand roles include:
· Hardware engineers: 39,370 jobs
· Technicians: 23,370 jobs
· Software engineers: 8,140 jobs
· Data specialists: 4,400 jobs
