Industry 5.0: Towards a sustainable, human-centric and resilient European industry

04 Jan 2022

The new Industry 5.0 report has been published by the European Commission. It complements the existing Industry 4.0 paradigm by highlighting research and innovation as drivers for a transition to a sustainable, human-centric and resilient European industry.

Problematic

An enormous challenge Europe faces today is how to transform human life quickly enough to enable 8 billion people to live sustainably and peacefully within planetary boundaries? While Europe cannot face this challenge alone, it leads the global community towards the deep systemic transformations required. Europe will only be able to achieve this leadership if it will at once strengthen its internal cohesion and capacity to speak with one single voice and promote a deep transformation of the economy at the global level.

European industry continuously needs to innovate to stay competitive. Now more than ever, we need to invest in the future, to overcome the economic challenges posed by the Coronavirus crisis, and to establish a “new normal” with a more competitive, more sustainable and greener European industry”, – says Mariya Gabriel,  Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, stressing on EU priorities: the European Green Deal, Europe Fit for the Digital Age and an Economy that Works for People.

Objectives

Industry 5.0 moves the focus from shareholder to stakeholder value, with benefits for all concerned. It aims to capture the value of new technologies, providing prosperity beyond jobs and growth, while respecting planetary boundaries, and placing the wellbeing of the industry worker at the center of the production process.

The structure

Industry 5.0 paper consists of an introduction and six parts, describing important aspects on the topic: R&I evidence base, Defining Industry 5.0, Benefits for the Worker and Industry, and “Making it happen” chapter, providing definitions of sustainability, human-centricity and resilience as the key terms.
