AENEAS Welcomes New Chairpersons to its TEG and Scientific Council

Paris, September 24, 2018 – The rapid pace of evolution of the Digital Economy requires a continuous reassessment of the technology required that will enable future products, systems & applications. The AENEAS Industrial Association has a key role in helping to map out that future and ensure that projects that it stimulates and manages help fulfil Europe’s economic and societal goals. To fulfil this requirement, AENEAS created two key bodies: the Technical Expert Group (TEG) and Scientific Council (SC). AENEAS today welcomes new chairpersons to its TEG and SC.

The AENEAS Scientific Council is responsible for helping to map the direction of technology in the medium to long term while the Technical Expert Group is performing the vital role of assessing and monitoring projects submitted as part of the EUREKA PENTA programme.

Members of the Councils are drawn from companies, research institutes and academia for the TEG and from research institutes and academia for the SC, at the forefront of technology research, development and innovation across Europe. As well as their core function, both groups contribute to a wide range of activities designed to support collaborative development in Europe. This includes the Electronic Components and Systems Strategic Research Agenda (ECS-SRA), revised annually, and the NEREID project, mapping the future of European nanoelectronics.

Membership is reviewed regularly to ensure that it involves the correct mix of advanced capability and knowledge that reflects the future direction of the Digital Economy and, in 2018, both groups have appointed new Chairpersons to lead them through the next period of innovation.

Patrick Pype, Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships at NXP, joins as TEG Chair. In this role he is responsible for ensuring that projects submitted under the PENTA programme have both the potential of significantly advancing the State-of-the-Art in Europe as well as being operationally viable with a good chance of reaching the project objectives. This includes partnering closely with Public Authorities across Europe to reach consensus on projects of high potential.

Enrico Sangiorgi, Vice Rector at the University of Bologna and Director between 2005-2011 of IU.NET, the Inter-University Consortium for Nanoelectronics, takes over the Chair of the AENEAS Scientific Council. The Council has a vital role in championing the long-term development of nanoelectronics in Europe.

Patrick and Enrico succeed Paul Merkus (Signify and TU Eindhoven) and Mart Graef (TU Delft) who have led the respective organisations for many years, establishing and developing their vital role in European technology development.

AENEAS is very grateful to Paul Merkus and Mart Graef for their strong and continuous involvement and vital contributions to AENEAS and the Electronic Components and Systems (ECS) Community through these Councils. The voluntary participation of so many leading experts in AENEAS activities ensures that it can fulfil its central role of supporting collaborative Research, Development and Innovation in Europe, in the key areas of systems and applications enabled by micro- and nanoelectronics.

AENEAS is an Industry Association, established in 2006. The purpose of the association is to promote Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) in order to strengthen the competitiveness of European industry across the complete Electronics Components and Systems (ECS) value chain. Member of ECSEL JU, AENEAS is also managing two funded EUREKA programmes, PENTA and CATRENE.
