H2O project puts the human at the centre of wearable computing for smart cities and the IoT
A project under the EUREKA CATRENE programme

Paris, 15 May 2018 – The CATRENE funding programme, managed by AENEAS, has exhibited the European H2O project at European Forum for Electronic Components and Systems, 5-7 December 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. This multi-disciplinary collaboration aims to develop a human-centric secured architecture that will help people control, configure and interact with objects, particularly in the field of wearable computing and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The fast-growing IoT market has huge potential for the economy and for our everyday lives. But there are still many challenges in domains such as user experience, power management, and data transfer and security. The H2O program is a European framework that enables organisations and companies of all sizes to work together on developing solutions that address such challenges. This means both developing the necessary technological bricks to speed market access for IoT end solutions, and encouraging end-user adoption by putting humans in control of the smart objects in their environment.

Europe is particularly well-placed to create solutions for these challenges because its research institutes and companies form a rich ecosystem covering the complete value chain. The H2O project builds on previous European programmes, such as eGo, to deliver a technology platform and validate it in a range of scenarios. The platform will form the basis for smart wearable devices that are non-intrusive, secure, low-cost and ‘always on’ for IoT and smart city applications such as communication, transportation, e-health and e-retail. This ‘always-on’ capability will transform the way humans and objects interact. The wearable device will constantly adapt to the user who has access at all times within a fully secure environment.
